Climbing Group Instruction Information Page

This page is dedicated to providing climbing instruction information to the members of the current year's Mountaineer's Basic Climbing Small Instruction Group. The small instruction group is a new method of instructing basic climbing students adopted for the instruction year 2008. Small groups of about 10 students will be guided through all the field trips, lectures and outings by their assigned instructors. We are hopeful that the students will find more the course more enjoyable and gain more climbing knowledge without feeling like they have wasted their time on certain occasions. Also this method of instructing small groups will greatly lessen the impact the Mountaineer's have on training areas such as Mount Rainier and Mount Erie.

Look here for info such as handouts, dates for events other necessary information for the course.

Events are posted on the calendar but here is a rundown of what is listed so far:

January 9th: Small Instruction Group (SIG) basic course kickoff meeting at the Olympus Room in the Mountaineers (mandatory, but let me know if you have a conflict with the date and/or time)

January 12th, 19th, 26th: Conditioner hike. Will likely be a snowshoe affair. We hope to practice snow travel skills during these one day outings. I would like the group members to attend 2 of the three weekend outings. These dates may change to Sunday possibly.

January 24th: Knots and Prusik practice. Location may be at Microsoft. We will do prusiking and get all the prusik material tied to the correct length. Will work on knots as well.

January, February, March and April: I have listed evening hikes on Thursday evening. Look for a posting each week for where and when or if we can't attend.

February 6th and 7th. Meet half of the group at vertical world for an evening of gym rock climbing.

February 10th: Belay field trip with Dave Morgan's group at Camp Long West Seattle. Perform rappelling, belaying, climbing. All the skills needed to pass the test field trip.

February 16th: Camp Muir day trip.

March 1st - 2nd: Possible overnight trip to Jove/Union Peaks area near Stevens Pass with another group to do snow skills.

March 15th and 16th: Overnight trip to Mount St. Helens to do final snow skills practice if needed and climb to the summit.

April 5th: Trip to Leavenworth or Vantage to rock climb. Possible overnight.

At this point you should be ready to get scheduled for one of the test field trips to get checked off by other instructors in each of your snow and rock skills. After you have completed snow and rock skills you are eligible for credit climbs.
